The challenge

The client had built a dominant position in automotive and had recently achieved record revenue. The strategic question was how to sustain that trajectory as the company looked beyond its traditional customer base.

Industrial automation and consumer electronics presented attractive possibilities, but the competitive environment, technology requirements and buying criteria differed considerably from automotive. The company needed to understand which next-generation technologies customers would value, what shortcomings they saw in current solutions and how established competitors were approaching these markets.

The objective was not diversification for its own sake. The client needed to identify markets where its existing engineering capabilities could translate into competitive advantage.

What we did

We conducted a cross-regional study covering the United States and Europe, combining technology analysis with customer, competitor and route-to-market research.

  1. 01

    Next-generation technology assessment

We engaged experts within the interconnect manufacturing ecosystem to identify emerging customer requirements and the technologies most likely to influence future product selection.

  2. 02

    Competitive and pricing intelligence

More than thirty international data sources were analysed alongside non-public intelligence gathered through our network. This allowed us to examine competitor pricing, delivery lead times, sales and operational strategies, supplier relationships and relative strengths and weaknesses.

  3. 03

    Customer and subsegment prioritisation

We evaluated where customer needs were changing most rapidly and identified the subsegments where the client's technology and manufacturing capabilities had the strongest potential fit.

  4. 04

    Go-to-market analysis

We examined competitor relationships and strategic partnerships to understand the balance between direct market coverage and partnership-led expansion in each target sector.

The outcome

The engagement identified the market drivers and subsegments most relevant to the client's diversification ambitions and translated them into a practical product development roadmap.

The client gained a clearer view of the next-generation technologies most likely to be demanded by customers, alongside detailed intelligence on competitor pricing, supplier relationships and market positioning.

This gave management a stronger basis for deciding where to invest beyond automotive and how to approach those opportunities commercially.

Is this your situation?

This engagement may be relevant if your company is strong in one established industry but sees an opportunity to transfer its technology into adjacent sectors and needs evidence on where that capability will translate most effectively. If that sounds familiar, we would be glad to discuss it.
