Multiple European markets assessed

The challenge

The client was an established global manufacturer with a medical device business serving surgical applications. It wanted to deepen its penetration across Europe but lacked the market-level insight required to determine where and how to compete more effectively.

The company needed to understand differences between major European markets, benchmark competitor pricing and market share, and identify the go-to-market channels being used by leading players.

A particularly important question concerned the end user. The client wanted to understand the challenges clinicians experienced with existing solutions and whether its own products offered meaningful advantages that could be translated into stronger positioning.

What we did

We combined direct clinical insight with market, competitor and product analysis.

  1. 01

    Clinician and expert research

We engaged experts within the medical device sector across multiple European countries to understand current adoption patterns, clinical priorities and emerging trends.

  2. 02

    Competitive benchmarking

More than ten European databases were analysed to assess pricing, market share and competitive positioning. Regional and national data was supplemented with information gathered across individual hospitals and clinics.

  3. 03

    Product and innovation analysis

We examined how competing solutions addressed clinical requirements, where users continued to experience challenges and which disruptive innovations were likely to influence the sector.

  4. 04

    Go-to-market assessment

Competitor distribution approaches were analysed to understand the role of direct sales and distributors across different European markets and how those models could inform the client's own expansion strategy.

The outcome

The client gained a more granular understanding of the European surgical device market, including competitive pricing across major markets and the commercial models used by incumbent suppliers.

Direct clinician insight identified specific shortcomings in existing solutions and clarified where the client's product could offer a more compelling proposition. Analysis of disruptive innovation gave management a forward-looking view of how the category could evolve.

The result was an evidence-based strategy for European penetration, linking clinician needs, product differentiation, pricing and commercial model.

Is this your situation?

This engagement may be relevant if your medical device already competes internationally but you need a deeper understanding of clinician needs, competitor positioning and local commercial models to increase penetration in Europe. If that sounds familiar, we would be glad to discuss it.
